“Down and to the Left”
(A Lament and a Prayer)
Verse 1:
We built our towers high,
Climbed the steps of pride.
We claimed to bear Your name,
But left the hurting behind.
We sought the seats of power,
Forgetting what You said—
The least will be exalted,
The humble will be fed.
Chorus:
Down and to the left, where mercy meets the pain,
Where love breaks chains of hatred, and grace falls like the rain.
Jesus, shake Your church, wake us from this dream—
To see You in the broken, to live the gospel we sing.
Verse 2:
We’ve drawn our borders tight,
Excluded those in need.
We’ve traded truth for numbers,
And called it victory.
But You’re found in the margins,
With the ones we’ve pushed aside.
Lord, strip us of our kingdoms,
And humble all our pride.
Chorus:
Down and to the left, where mercy meets the pain,
Where love breaks chains of hatred, and grace falls like the rain.
Jesus, shake Your church, wake us from this dream—
To see You in the broken, to live the gospel we sing.
Bridge:
Not in thrones or banners raised,
Not in laws or worldly praise.
Your kingdom moves in secret ways,
Through servanthood and grace.
Chorus:
Down and to the left, where mercy meets the pain,
Where love breaks chains of hatred, and grace falls like the rain.
Jesus, shake Your church, wake us from this dream—
To see You in the broken, to live the gospel we sing.
